ISDN Switch Off and How to Handle It

What the switch off means, and how you can prepare

Firstly, what is ISDN? ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network and allows voice and video, along with other services to be digitally transmitted simultaneously. This transmission occurs over a PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).

BT announced back in 2015 that ISDN will be switched off in 2025, however the phase out will begin in 2020. Meaning you will no longer be able to place an ISDN order. Here at Gowerbiz, we have already stopped placing these orders.

Why is this happening?

ISDN and PSTN are known as legacy systems, and are rapidly becoming out-dated. Along with the cost of maintenance and running, they are no longer the best solution as they were when they were first installed.

What’s the alternative to ISDN?

BT is switching to VoIP or Voice over IP. This uses a protocol called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which lets you make voice and video calls over an internet connection. There are several benefits to this; the most attractive being cost. With VoIP, you can have multiple line numbers on a single physical line therefore drastically reducing your line rental costs. Calls between SIP users are also free, making this the perfect solution for a company with multiple nationwide, or even global offices.

Sometimes you will see VoIP systems mentioned as cloud-based telephony.

What do I need to do?

We will happily discuss how to migrate your existing phone system. Furthermore, given the time frame, you could still finish your existing contract before migrating. See our ‘Communication’ service page, to learn what we offer. Doing nothing will result in losing your phone line. So it is important you start preparing now.

Will I need to purchase new phones?

This depends on your current handsets and our survey of your setup. Take a look at our post on ‘Choosing the right handset’ to have a look at a few of the handsets currently on offer.

At this moment, it’s important to get the ball rolling, so give us a call on 01792 762646 and we can show you how easy this migration can be.
